++abstract
an interrogation into modes and situations of 'passengers' and acting in (urban) surroundings, the effects of 'the street'; + the exploration of how the notion of 'becoming' (which involves a politics of relations) can be understood through a language of practice, reflecting our acknowledgment of new technologies as integrated in everyday life while trans/forming it.
++curating
the issue of immediate multiple answers/questions, responses, dialogues. - A MATTER OF negotiating relations, a matter of responsibilities, an analysis or report of a situation . The legitimating function of the gallery is to a certain point to acknowledge as rightful. I am responding to positions in relation to a temporality of a field.
++site where the project takes place
Once a year the gallery fotoforum offers the site to an 'external' project. The politics are to make an ex/change happen, to open up the gallery space, programme, the public, to extend. As I have chosen London as my present work-living place, as artist, writer, researcher, R asked me to do something in relation to this environment, the particular 'place'.
++approach
A first approach circles around the notion and definition of present urban places / passing + otherness / cultural transformation with its representational forms. I am interested in artists, who's work -beside of the 'final product' or document- certainly reflects their exploration and interest in the process of making as a kind of mapping. ('acting without an actor')*. The work exhibit can for example be understood as recorded event, within a geographical continuum. what (kind of) work then >>>> to begin with, I am using the notion of 'a being travelled', which I am identifying as a definition of a subject, which constitutes itself and time, and which is constituted in relation to the permanent changing environment.
that is, a negotiation between a doing and a being done.
It is situated within on the one hand current environmental passing in 'urban' space (means: on the street, places of exchange, crossings, margins), and the 'urban' space itself - (its 'form' or body reflecting people -psychological engagement). - On the other hand creation or cultural transformation as intervention by bringing a discontinuity into play. a stop. or creation of something which needs attention and calls for 'individual / social time'. vorueberziehen
>>>> The 'city' or cultural landscape is not a container, neither empty nor full, or a stage - the 'shape of time and space' is co/dependent on the subject. It is the 'action' or doing through which a subject is made a certain subject. ('2001-preference to sensation') politics of relations: The flow, which Michel Serres understands as the continuous and stable, is in contradiction with the base or 'fixed grounds', for example architecture, the earth, the 'already there'.
That would suggest to formulate and re/invent the Other, otherness in terms of a degree of in/difference and 'distance'. in cultural environment, everything becomes too close, and everyThing and One is recognisable as familiar. (boredom, social repression) in the encounter with the 'photographic image', the 'cinematic imagery', analogous-digital, and the video-installation I am choosing, it is the process of continuity and its representational forms which is constantly at stake. A new 'dimension' or the idea of 'new experience', which was already there, is thinkable through the effects within 'new technologies'.
Recognising a change within the process of 'making' is to actualise the function of A Medium. (a 'dynamic obsolete') A conflict - critique is developed by searching the fictional as the factual and vice versa.
++choices, fast forward
juan cruz >>>> sense of 'places' and surroundings, coming into being through the other, formed in the now through listening for example ----- a 'giving' ----- exploring a form of re/presentation as constituted in the now, through a subject in a situation, rather than referring to the 'origin'. (_synthesis of finite and infinite forming a subject) ----- role of narration + translation -----techniques of migration
martyn evans >>>> definition of the non-place (ref. Marc Auge) ----- providing subjects formed through interaction with ----- the 'worn path' in the city - collective unconscious -----'negotiation of relations' ----- techniques of the collage and participation, see Grimonprez
maria moreira >>>> 'mobile cinematic' ----- mode of negotiation urban and the Other ----- installation as device ----- the artists' 'marking'
nils norman >>>> expansion of "Urbanomics" ----- a new series of sections on gates, bins,... in urban space. ----- 'making' as a process of 'mapping', analysis of the everyday ----- avoidance of the artists 'intuition' as a means of motivation ----- relation to the photograph? photographic surface ----- cultural utterance = resistance, voice! ----- (mixture of archival photos and Norman's Photos. CHOICE) artist as chooser, choreoprapher ----- situationist gesture ----- interrogating the means of marginal spaces and gestures
cian quale >>>> reverse journey ----- travelling artist - dislocation ----- the status of the archive, the new contained in the archive ----- role of obsolescence as 'salvation' (Benjamin) ----- project on the 'gas station' and the metaphorical use of 'travelling'. ref. for example Gerhard Richter's atlas ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The subject of my proposal and the combination of the artists reflect my interest in making the connection between the gallery's idea (the negotiation of places, cities) and the idea of uncertainties as motivation, shifting senses and thoughts, which happens through a being travelled, in cities, in EUROPE, in cinemas, in everyday life, while passing, while exhibiting.
